US economy to weaken as housing market declines
Filed Oct 02, 2006 at 1:24 PM ·
A tumbling housing market will cut sharply
into U.S. economic growth for the remainder of this year and throughout 2007,
but the American economy will stave off a recession, according to the
Conference Board's U.S. Outlook - Autumn 2006.
"The spectacular gains in U.S. housing prices over the past few years
have come to a grinding halt, forcing households to curtail spending sharply,"
said Kip Beckman, Principal Research Associate. "Weaker housing demand will
have a ripple effect across the American economy, yet the United States will
not fall into recession next year because of strong growth in business
investment and exports."

Glut of unsold homes pummels US housing
Filed Sep 26, 2006 at 6:18 AM ·
The long-predicted correction in U.S. housing prices has apparently begun.
The median selling price fell for the first time in 11 years last month, on an annual basis, pushed lower by the largest glut of unsold homes since 1993, and some economists fear the worst may lie ahead.
