US MBA's Mortgage Applications Index Fell 3.9% Last Week

U.S. mortgage applications fell last week for the first time in four weeks, reflecting a drop in demand for home refinancing even as interest rates hovered near recent lows, an industry trade group said on Wednesday.

Mortgage applications increase on refinancings

Mortgage applications in the U.S. rose last week as refinancing increased to the highest level since September 2005, according to an industry report released Wednesday.
The Mortgage Bankers Association said its index of applications to buy a home or refinance an existing loan increased 2.8 percent last week, to 690.5 from 671.6 the previous week.

Virginia and Roy Starkes refinanced their home in Richmond, Va., four times after buying it 15 years ago.
The fourth was the killer.
The Starkeses didn't realize that the monthly payment on their most recent loan would jump to about $1,200 from $1,051 in May -- a budget buster for the low-income couple. Their interest rate will "reset" every six months, potentially maxing out at 15.85 percent.

Refinanced US mortage amounts rise

US mortgage activity rises

Mortgage applications in the U.S. rebounded last week after two straight declines as purchases and refinancing increased.
The Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday that its index of applications to buy a home or refinance an existing loan rose 3.6 percent, to 575.6, from the previous week. The group's index of purchases increased 4.3 percent, and the refinancing gauge rose 2.2 percent.
